Memories of Balala

CHF 750.00

We lived for 27 years next door to Balala Station, near Uralla, which at its peak was 48,000 hectares. The station was like a small village, with a wool shed, blacksmith, school, workers’ cottages, and the main homestead. Due to unknown circumstances, the station was run down and derelict when we moved to our land. We were dear friends of the owner and his wife at the time, and it was a real disappointment when we had to move. The land was granite country with predominantly native grasses, perfect for superfine wool sheep. In this painting I tried to depict a feeling of the beauty of the granite boulders, allied with the leached country and its spindly grasses. I loved this country as it was harsh and hard – you went with it and could never dominate it with modern farming practices.
